Why Real Madrid Possess 'Utter Trust' in Teenager Pitarch
Whenever a teenage makes Real Madrid history in a pivotal Champions League tie against City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.
During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time European champions claimed a three-nil last-16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to confirm a last eight berth.
Aged 18 years old, Pitarch was the club's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.
Rapid Ascent From The Academy
This talent is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.
He joined Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a positive impact.
He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in January.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and determination he added to the side.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'
In the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to train with the senior squad and awarded him playing time during the warm-up matches.
Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I began playing the game, every day you head to training and every day you have a game," stated the player after his debut.
"I have just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."
Handed a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.
Pitarch has seized it with performances that have defied his age and inexperience.
"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He is extremely dynamic, with great endurance, effort and movement."
The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.
"His standout trait is his character," added he. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.
"I realize people are astonished to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to do what he usually does.
"He will continue to get chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."
A Future International Decision
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, moving through local academies before entering the club's renowned youth academy.
He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the option to play for either country at the highest level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a competitive senior international match.
He has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the under-19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are watching his rise with interest.
In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision soon."
This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for Spain, Brahim decided to represent the Atlas Lions.
Eyes on the Prize
At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He played over an hour in the two-one victory at City, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the team chase trophies to come.
After his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.
"The manager handles me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it excessively - I have to earn my minutes on the field," he commented following the win at Manchester.
