The United Kingdom Prepared to Utilize Seized Russia's Holdings to Support the Ukrainian Defense
The UK is prepared to move forward with employing the total value of immobilized Russian funds to support Ukraine's military campaign, PM Sir Keir Starmer has stated.
In a collective announcement, the officials of the United Kingdom, France, and the Federal Republic of Germany stated that this coordinated action would increase strain on Russia's leader Vladimir Putin and compel the Russian Federation to participate in talks.
They further noted that the initiative would be implemented in tight collaboration with the United States.
UK sanctions have frozen more than £25bn of Russian assets since Moscow launched its comprehensive attack against Ukraine in 2022. Yet, up to this point, resources sent to the Ukrainian government using Russian assets had only been taken from earnings and returns earned on them.
Sir Keir assured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that the UK, France, and Germany were aligned in their desire to advance efforts toward employing the full value of the immobilized Russian sovereign holdings to halt hostilities.
He stated that additional restrictions over the next period would heighten the tension on the Russian government.
This statement follows European Union officials gathered in the Danish capital last week to discuss using frozen Russia's funds for a €140bn credit to Ukraine.
In the previous month, American leader Donald Trump encouraged G7 allies to seize or utilize immobilized Russia's funds, based on news outlets.
The value of seized Russian holdings in the EU is estimated to be almost €211bn.
