The megacity Wakes Up to Dangerous Haze Following Celebrations

As Tuesday dawned residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves inhaling extremely polluted air that fell into the "critical" range.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Readings

Several parts of the city registered an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which equals 10x the recommended threshold recommended by the global health authority.

Particular areas, levels of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1,800, equating to fifteen to twenty times higher than acceptable standards.

Pyrotechnics Ban and Recent Changes

Since 2020, authorities had maintained a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during the Festival of Lights due to their major role to the dangerous smog that engulfs the capital as colder weather sets in.

Nevertheless in recent months, the newly elected local leadership petitioned the highest court to request a modification of the prohibition.

They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically criticized by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent less polluting – as a compromise between "cultural practices and environment".

Legal Ruling and Implementation

Much to the frustration of public health and environmental advocates, the court approved the appeal, stipulating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during designated hours throughout the celebrations.

During the celebrations, there was extensive flouting of the time restrictions across the capital, with insufficient monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.

Several air quality sensors throughout the city registered pollution reaching highest levels around late evening to the most severe levels recorded during Diwali in at least three years.

International Consequences

Extensive ignition of fireworks during the celebrations also triggered a dispute with adjacent Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistan's the Punjab region partly blaming worsening pollution levels in Lahore on contaminants originating in neighboring India following the events.

Long-Standing Environmental Problem

Alarmingly severe levels of pollution in Delhi have remained as a serious challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the problem showing no improvement.

Around the festival period, the levels of toxic particles in the atmosphere has been observed to shoot up to seventy percent above the peak levels ever documented in China's capital, which was once viewed as the planet's dirtiest city.

Diverse Pollution Sources

The situation in the capital is attributed to a combination of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, development work, garbage fires and smoke from farm burning in nearby states of neighboring agricultural zones.

In these regions, agricultural workers illegally burn crop residue to prepare for next season, producing dangerous pollution that then gets trapped over the capital as cooler air sets in.

Health and Financial Impact

Public health and economic impact on the nearly 33 million residents residing in the Delhi area is enormous, according to various research.

The contaminated air leads to high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing diseases, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.

Air quality crisis is estimated to be responsible for 10,000 early deaths per year in the city.
