The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill and Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive experience where a girl harboring multiple personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Within her exist four separate souls, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a creepy hospital, while other scenes show the main character exploring a desolate chapel.
A World of Personal Dread
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to others can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are specific to every individual."
The central gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these identities will switch against your will as you play. During exploration, each soul's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with nurses who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their necks should be. Flowers are a recurring theme, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four souls claims that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
After a player have deduced a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The last one remaining could be a fake. Either way, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
