Multiple Affected as Turbulence Hits A Delta Airlines Plane Landing at Sydney, Australia

Delta Airlines stated the plane encountered "short-lived turbulence" as it touched down at its destination.

Multiple passengers and crew were hurt after a Delta Airlines aircraft originating in LA to Sydney encountered rough air this past Friday.

Delta Flight 41 "experienced a brief period of turbulence" as it landed at the Sydney airport, a company official informed. Four flight attendants required medical attention.

Local paramedics said they evaluated five individuals, and transferred three of them to hospital with relatively minor issues that comprised back pain and head pain. The injured ranged from their 30s to 70s.

It is the most recent case of aircraft being hit by turbulence, with aviation specialists indicating that global warming is a major factor.

The aircraft was carrying 245 passengers and fifteen staff members on the wide-body jet, the representative noted, stating that the plane touched down "safely and normally" at Sydney Airport at 6:48 a.m. local time on Friday morning.

Paramedics indicated they were alerted just three minutes before the plane touched down, and response teams were standing by on the runway.

Why plane turbulence is growing increasingly prevalent - and more severe.

In the previous year, two dozen individuals were hurt when a separate Delta aircraft, on a route from Salt Lake City, Utah to Amsterdam, Netherlands, experienced "severe" rough air just 120 minutes into the transoceanic journey, and diverted for an emergency landing.

Earlier this year, passengers and crew on a Singapore Airlines jet endured a harrowing five seconds period of extreme instability. An individual died and dozens were injured, as individuals not fastened in lifted out of their seats and were slammed back.

Turbulence is a common occurrence while flying, and while occurrences of rough conditions seem to be rising, they are remained quite uncommon.

Estimates show that there are an estimated 5,000 incidents of severe or worse turbulence annually, out of a total of more than 35 million journeys that currently occur around the world.

Strong atmospheric disturbance is defined as when the sudden jolts of a jet passing through disturbed air apply in excess of a significant G-force on your body - a strong enough force to lift you out of your seat if you weren't wearing a seatbelt.

As global warming modifies atmospheric conditions, specialists caution that air travel could become bumpier: temperature changes and changing jet streams in the jet stream level are expected to increase the regularity and severity of significant turbulence.
