Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
The forward, with six months remaining on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the club's supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Reliable Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United appear to be building momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought additional activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
