Israeli citizens commemorate second remembrance of 7 October incident as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations proceed
Citizens have gathered across the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-led assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The assault saw in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel answered by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"Our bloodthirsty enemies have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the leader stated on that day.
He also vowed to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the return of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will never again create a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed state remembrance events until 16 October - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still occurred around the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast across Israeli television channels.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was observed across the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams convened in the North African coastal city of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to examine the provisions of the agreement.
A senior Palestinian official knowledgeable about the talks indicated that an late session of negotiations began at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official stated the earlier meeting concluded without tangible results, because of differences over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not resume combat after the opening period of the deal.
He commented that the negotiations are "tough and have not yet achieve any real breakthrough," but noted that mediators are working hard to reduce the differences between the both parties.
Key Matters in Negotiations
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The swap of the captives still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Arrangements for humanitarian aid provision
- Future management of the territory
Civilian Sentiment
In the city's memorial area that day, young Hagar - whose family member survived the attack on the gathering, where many attendees were killed and many more were captured by Hamas gunmen - told: "No location seems like home anymore and until each abducted person are released no one will feel safe."
"Once we see everybody home once more, we can breathe again. Then we can start to recover," she concluded.
Outside the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their solidarity for the relatives of the hostages. Israel says forty-eight continue in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be surviving.
Demonstrator one woman stated: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement needed for the abducted to come back home. But we really want promises that we will be protected."
Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that about 70% of Israelis want the war to end in return for the freedom of the captives.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the site of the music event, mourners came together to honor the dead.
From that location, the noise of aerial bombardments and artillery could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people indicated the severe Israeli shelling continued.
In the urban center, bombardments were reported in the dawn of that day in the west side neighborhood, Rimal and locality areas and in the eastern district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwest.
"Once the dusk arrives, the anxiety appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a mother, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike earlier, shared.
"We are afraid of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are resting together, holding each other, particularly my little child who puts his head on me throughout the night."
"Every second we monitor the reports to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the conflict will come back to us."
Medical Situation
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area reported it had taken in the corpses of half dozen people by the afternoon, including three who died in an Israeli bombing in the south part area.
A different healthcare center in the south region of Khan Younis indicated another two victims had been transported. A person was died by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get help to the south region, medics reported.
