American flight controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they remain on duty unpaid during the government shutdown, the transport chief has announced.

"The controllers are becoming strained," Sean Duffy informed Fox News on Sunday, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

Following the government shut down on 1 October, flight controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were told to continue performing their jobs uncompensated.

But a number have been missing, leading terminals to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has added to setbacks due to weather and other issues.

More than 3,000 American flights were postponed on Sunday, and the secretary said he anticipates the situation to grow worse.

"I am seeing the stress," Duffy said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had met with several controllers to hear their worries firsthand.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I work for Uber, am I able to secure another source of income to cover expenses?'" he continued.
