Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Major Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about watching this charming family navigate their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to help comedy break out of its current cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to enjoy the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
